Cruise 2.0

OF COURSE we went on another cruise. When they're so cheap, and we don't have to do ANY dishes, how could we not? Plus, I LOVE that I get to turn my phone off for a whole week. This time we tried the Carnival line, Freedom ship.

This year we stopped at Key West and a couple of places in the Bahamas. The Gulf wasn't as calm this year as previously. Let's just say there was a lot of puking going on around the ship. And some of it from a stranger splattered on my foot. Don't worry, there will NOT be more on that later.

Have you seen Doctor Who? Do you know what the Daleks are? Click here for a reference. Let's just say, the Freedom ship looks like it could have been built by the Daleks. Finger down throat—so INCREDIBLY UGLY. My poor designer sensitivities—they needed a detox when we got home.

After exploring the ship, we found our tiny room...

...and promptly went for a drink...

...and explored other parts of the deck—like the track. Which we didn't visit again.

And later of course we spent time playing cards. Our go-to past time with these friends.

First stop! Key West! Don't you love this photo? They were all pretty much already standing like this looking out at the island. So, after nudging Adam over bit, and calling everyone's attention...click!

Key West is sunny, humid, and green.
There are no beaches so we walked around looking at shops.
We also found a nice little spot for lunch that was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
See it...? Right back there. Garbo's Grill. It's a tiny little booth, they're open until the meat runs out. Which was quick! We were lucky to get ours.
I ordered the Korean BBQ tacos. Wow! Very full flavored, and deliciously spicy.
Enter a giant macaroon for dessert and that finished off our afternoon in Key West.

Next stop:

Finally, a chance to find a beach! We crammed into a Taxi Van with another group of people and off we went! Can people BE any happier than when they are headed to a beach? I think not.

This was a great beach. Calm water with all kinds of creatures to find and see...like live conches!
We brought snorkeling gear and spent the entire time exploring the ocean floor. To my dismay, I brought the wrong size batteries for the waterproof camera. So I can't show you what we saw!

I don't think Nick got out of the water until it was time to leave. Most of the time we saw his fins in the air as he dove down into the water.
Below: Snot on Adam's face. Just kidding. We learned last year that snorkeling masks won't seal over facial hair. We brought Vaseline this time and he enjoyed it much better.
(I learned how to snorkel in a high school P.E. class. How cool is that? It's totally made a difference for me. I'm glad I finally get to do it. I love it!)

Stacy wanted to take a starfish home that her hubby found. Alas, she discovered it was still alive and so she tossed it back into the ocean at port. I wonder if starfish make good pets?

Last stop:

Such a pretty beast. Uh...I mean beach...Cabbage Beach to be exact.

I found the right batteries to take the camera into the water...but alas...this part of the ocean was a beastie. It was rather wild. No snorkeling here.

It was almost impossible to stay together for a good photo!

If you're not a good swimmer *Ahem Adam* this is not the beach for you. I even got a little sea sick...so I didn't stay in the water long.

Is this the beach where Marla described Stacy and my almost drowning as "Epic"? Why yes. Yes it is.
Getting out of the water and back onto the beach was like going through a wash cycle in a front loader. I asked Adam to illustrate in the photos below while I tell the story.

When it was time to get out—I was afraid. I knew getting past the waves were going to be a problem. A bit of positive self talking and then Stacy and I made our way inland.
But not before waves came crashing down on top of us and the rip tide pulled us right back in again. Stacy and I tumbled over each other, she went over me, and my own legs went over my head, and the water went up my nose and into my brain. We were both holding pool noodles while this was happening—it must have looked ridiculous!

The scary thing is, once it was over we had to figure out which direction was up, which direction was landward, stand back up, catch our breath and start hauling booty out of the water—except that the tide was pulling backward at us so we were moving too slow and next wave was coming too fast.

I shouted at Stacy, "We have to get out NOW!" She was still sputtering next to me. I think she thought we'd cleared the waves. I looked up the beach for Adam, hoping maybe he could rescue me....And then the next one slammed into the back of us. Again with the tumbling, and the ocean going up my nose and my face slamming into the sand.... "Am I going to make it out of this one???"

We made it out. Barely. We crawled up the beach and as soon as we knew we were clear we stopped and plopped down and stared out at the ocean. I think we were both a little stunned and trying to process what had happened. We were still clinging to our pool noodles, coughing and spitting, and laughing trying not to cry. It was scary funny.

Have you seen Finding Dori? Did you see the little short with the baby bird and the ocean? There's a scene that perfectly illustrates our experience. If you see it, you'll understand why I cracked up extra loud in the theater.

Hours later I was still blowing water out of my nose—every time I turned my head to the side more drained out involuntarily. The sand was...well...everywhere. It looked like I had shampoed my hair with it (it was very sparkly) and later when I took my swimsuit off, I still had another suit of sand caked to me. Adam thought it was hilarious. It kinda was.

On the taxi ride back, as I was replaying the whole experience in my head, I was laughing so hard I was crying.

Yes Marla...I think it was epic too.

And then just like that we had more:

Sitting around.

Cards and more cards.

Late night movies on deck.

Fancy dinners.

Eating too many dinners. (Seriously, Carnival is good with the food. Come dinner time, no one was hungry because of all the lovely snacks we'd had during the day. We ate out of principle. Not out of starvation.)

Resting on deck.

Smooching during the comedy show.

Poolside muscle flexing.

Group photos in the horrible lighting of the ship.

Napping on hammocks under towels.

Game shows.
Ice cream.

Worth it. Yes. A chance to leave the house and make memories? Always yes.

She Had ANOTHER Birthday

Seriously people. The birthdays are never ending. But at least THIS one was VERY different. The DAY of my birthday, we signed papers and closed on the house. How fun is THAT?

The next day we received the keys and Adam carried me in. (We will have to fix the references to TCU...it's even on the curb. Sorry Texas, we're BYU kids.)

We are goobers but, whatev.  Password: threshold

I thought it would be fun to play games with friends in the new empty house. (The water wasn't even on...I feel bad about the bathroom situation. Oh well.) We served dinner, and played cards with friends. Our friends both brought cakes. It was a lovely evening spent with my local "family".

Wait a Second...

we missed an anniversary? What?! The big One - Zero? We've been so caught up in this move it feels like we've been swallowed by it. But no worries—we DID celebrate our tenth year. Guess what we did...put the offer on the house! Mwah hah hah...what? Did you expect a different answer? I TOLD you we've been swallowed up by the house and our anniversary is where it all started.

No worries though. Since humans HAVE to eat—that's how we decided to celebrate. I went digging around for gift certificates I've been hoarding for various eateries and we celebrated for free!

First...a round of cream slushes from Sonic. I recommend strawberry all the way my friends. But I suppose an honorable mention could go to Adams favorite...lime.

Then later, dinner at Wing Stop! One of our very favorite go-to places. They are starting to recognize us. The wings and fries are top notch. Top. Notch. I mean, there's sugar in the fry seasoning. See? Can't go wrong.

And for dessert a couple of—ahem—tubs of Baskin Robins. Hey, it's cheaper to buy the pints than it is to purchase by the scoop. I am a believer in stretching ice cream as far it it will go.

Happy 10th my to my love. And thanks to friends who give gift certificates! It's so fun to save them for something special.

Here, There, Everywhere

Running is everything they say it is, empowering, energizing, meditative. And I like it. Me! Like running?! Yes. That only proves it's addicting. It feels GOOD! It makes me happy. It challenges me, and then I overcome that challenge. I win! Every time I go for a run...I WIN!

I run here...
I run there...and just about everywhere. In fact, when we booked our cruise I started looking up running routes in the ports. I've started watching race documentaries. I get the running jokes posted on Pinterest. My running shoes are the most expensive shoes I own. Do I have a problem?

I enjoy finding new routes, it makes a long run seem shorter. Plus who doesn't like new scenery?
I signed up to run a Hot Chocolate 5k in Dallas in February to support a friend, then she couldn't make it, so Adam came in her place and kept me company.

It was cold and early and when we arrived, still dark outside. I didn't bring a jacket because I'd just take it off 5 minutes into the race so we took shelter inside a building for a while and then later stood in our race corals taking selfies and freezing until it was our turn.
(PS. I love photobombers. They crack me up.)
I hate the idea of PAYING to run—but the race was exciting! Loud music, wrestlers and pumped up people...can you imagine all the adrenaline everyone is experiencing? We're all chatty, taking photos, jumping up and down, dancing to the music, and then as soon as we cross the line and start our timers—it becomes silent. And all we hear is "pit pat pit pat" of A LOT of shoes hitting the pavement. I was unprepared to hear that sound effect and laughed out loud.

Adam was a great running partner, he kept my pace (he's usually faster) and since it was only 3.1 miles it was over quick! And though it was in a crummy part of Dallas, it was still nice to run somewhere new.

Our reward for running? HOT CHOCOLATE baby! Along with dipping chocolate and various treats for it. We also received a jacket which you saw all the lemmings wearing a few photos up.

The bibs have a chip in them that record your stats which you can look up by scanning your QR barcode with your phone after the race. In doing the math, we came in at the top 15% overall, the top 11% of all females, and top 10% of females in my age group. That was interesting to see, I'd had no idea where I rank generally. I just...run. Though, as you can see—I'm not fast.

By the time I ran the 5k I was already running longer distances at home. But the 5k was so fun I decided to bump up my mileage and try for a 15k.

But as I mentioned, it's hard to swallow the cost of a race. So when I was ready, I ran a personal 15k instead. For me, that's 1. 5 hours of running. I was pretty emotional during the last mile. A car passed me while I was finishing up and as it drove ahead, the passenger and driver stuck their arm out the windows and gave me a thumbs up. To which I responded by putting both my arms in the air and yelling. And then I started crying. Note: don't cry while running. Your throat will close up and you will literally have difficulty breathing. Eeeek!

But that kind of encouragement is totally awesome! Anyway, of course I Snapped the victory to EVERYONE.

So I continue to run. I never regret doing it. It's helped immensely with depression and gives me a reason to go outside everyday and "connect" with something else other than a screen.

And look where it's getting me! I'm up to 11 miles. (I use MapMyRun to record runs. And for music to help keep pace, I use Spotify. You can set it to play music all of the same tempo.) Next mileage goal—a half marathon!

So, NO I will not slow down in your neighborhood. I got me some mileage to log and some goals to reach! I'm gunna run here and there and EVERYWHERE!
