If you’re looking for a Texas bucket list item, and you love a good meal, here’s one you ought to scribble down. On a Friday or Saturday afternoon, pile your friends into your car and enjoy a road trip down to Leona, Texas—a nowhere place with a single stoplight, there you will find the Leona General Store and Steakhouse.
It took us two hours to get there and we arrived 1.5 hours before the store opened. Gratefully, we were second in a long line that went down the block and around the corner. If you get in line by 9:00pm they guarantee to feed you. (The steakhouse is only open three nights a week, and you can only get steak on two of those nights.)

It’s not much by way of fancy, but it serves up one of the best hole-in-the-wall meals and desserts you can imagine.
You order your steak by the ounce, which comes out flame grilled, hot and juicy with just the right seasoning. There is no salt, pepper, or sauce on the table nor will it cross anyone’s mind to ask for it.
EVERYTHING was delicious. The rolls MUST have been cooked directly in butter! The potatoes were scrape-them-all-off-your-plate worthy. And the desserts! You can choose from a smattering of options. ALL of which were surprisingly quite tasty. (Sometimes desserts can fall flat, especially cobblers, but these got a thumbs up from everyone!)
Note: by this time, I was back on the stupid candida diet. So, I had one very small nibble of everything to quell my curiosity. But as for the the steak, I enjoyed ALL of it! We’ll go back when I can handle more!
